Improving Diversity and Inclusion in the Workplace

Written by Kristine Keykal, MPH, CEO of AdvantageHealth Corporation

Creating a diverse and inclusive workplace is essential for enhancing creativity, decision-making, and employee satisfaction. Here are key strategies to improve diversity and inclusion and steps we are stiving to take:

1) Develop Inclusive Policies

Implement comprehensive anti-discrimination policies, ensure equal hiring opportunities, and offer flexible working arrangements. Regularly update these policies to address new issues and maintain effectiveness.

2) Promote Inclusive Leadership

Leaders should value diverse perspectives and work to eliminate biases. Provide training on unconscious bias, cultural competence, and inclusive leadership. Leaders should model inclusive behaviors, such as seeking input from all team members and recognizing diverse contributions.

3) Foster a Culture of Belonging

Encourage open communication, celebrate diverse holidays, and support employee resource groups (ERGs). ERGs offer a platform for shared identities and interests, advocating for positive change. Mentorship and sponsorship programs can help underrepresented employees advance their careers.

4) Diversify Recruitment Practices

Broaden the talent pool by reaching out to diverse communities and professional associations. Use structured interview processes and diverse hiring panels to ensure fair evaluations. Implement blind recruitment techniques to reduce unconscious bias.

5) Provide Ongoing Education

Offer workshops and online courses on cultural competence, unconscious bias, and allyship. Encourage employees to engage in these learning opportunities and facilitate discussions on diversity-related topics.

6) Measure and Hold Accountable

Set clear, measurable goals and collect data on diversity metrics. Regularly review outcomes and gather employee feedback to identify areas for improvement. Transparent reporting fosters trust and demonstrates a genuine commitment to inclusion.
