July is Healthy Vision Month, making it the perfect time for companies to bring eye health into focus as part of their employee wellness strategy.

When we think of workplace wellness programs, we often focus on physical activity, nutrition, and mental well-being—but vision health is a vital (and often overlooked) part of overall employee health. With so many jobs requiring extended screen time, it’s more important than ever to promote eye care and prevent vision-related problems in the workplace.

Here’s how your organization can support healthy vision at work and create a more focused, productive workforce:

👁️ 1. Educate Employees About Vision Health

Start with awareness:

  • Share articles, infographics, or short videos about common eye issues like digital eye strain, dry eyes, and blue light exposure.

  • Provide tips on the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.

  • Offer webinars or lunch-and-learn sessions with optometrists or eye health experts.

🖥️ 2. Assess Ergonomics and Screen Use

Prolonged screen use is a major contributor to eye fatigue. Help your team avoid this by:

  • Encouraging proper screen positioning (an arm’s length away, with the top of the screen at eye level).

  • Offering blue light screen filters or providing guidance on enabling night mode.

  • Promoting regular screen breaks throughout the day.

👓 3. Offer Vision Insurance or Discounts

If your benefits package doesn’t include vision coverage, consider:

  • Adding a vision insurance plan that covers annual exams, glasses, and contacts.

  • Partnering with local optometrists or vision centers to offer discounts on exams and eyewear.

  • Hosting on-site vision screenings or mobile eye clinics for added convenience.

💡 4. Make Eye-Friendly Workspaces a Priority

Good lighting can reduce eye strain and fatigue:

  • Optimize natural light in the office.

  • Provide adjustable task lighting for individual desks.

  • Reduce glare on screens by using shades or anti-glare screen protectors.

🕶️ 5. Promote Sunglasses and UV Protection

Since July is also a sunny summer month, it's a great time to remind employees about UV safety:

  • Share reminders to wear UV-protective sunglasses during commutes or lunch breaks.

  • Host a “Sunglasses Day” where staff can show off their favorite shades.

  • Provide branded sunglasses as a summer wellness giveaway.
