Tips to Avoid Drinking & Driving During the Holidays

Written by Dana Wisniewski, MS, Health Promotion Manager at AdvantageHealth Corporation

December is NATIONAL IMPAIRED DRIVING PREVENTION MONTH.

The holiday season is a time for celebration, but it’s also a time when the risk of drinking and driving increases. To ensure your safety and the safety of others, it’s important to plan ahead and make responsible choices. Here are some quick tips to avoid drinking and driving during the holidays:

  • Plan for a Designated Driver: If you know you’ll be drinking, arrange for a designated driver who will stay sober and get everyone home safely.

  • Use Ride-Sharing Services: Apps like Uber and Lyft make it easy to get a ride when you’ve had a few drinks. Avoid the temptation to drive by using these services.

  • Stay Over: If you’re attending a party at a friend’s or family member’s house, plan to stay the night if you’ve been drinking. It’s always better to crash on the couch than risk driving.

  • Limit Your Alcohol Intake: Set a drink limit for yourself before heading to an event. Pacing yourself and alternating with non-alcoholic beverages can help you avoid overindulging.

  • Host Responsibly: If you're hosting, offer non-alcoholic drink options and encourage guests to arrange rides or stay over if needed.
